Brand New Book, Good Condition, Dispatch from our warehouse in the UK.

A man is guilty for opposing the Terror because he thereby reveals a lack of desire for Virtue. There is something terrible in the sacred love of one’s country: a love so all-embracing that it sacrifices everything ruthlessly, fearlessly, favouring none, to the public good.’ Louis-Antoine de Saint-Just, the ‘Angel of Death’. From autumn 1793 to the summer of 1794, the young French Republic was subjected to a reign of institutionalised terror. The Republic founded on Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, became paralysed by endemic suspicion and betrayal, fear and reprisal. Personified by Robespierre and Saint-Just in Paris and government envoys - the representatives of the people – sent out into the provinces, the Terror convulsed and eventually sickened all France. This freakish, bloodthirsty passage of history is vividly evoked in Graeme Fife’s new book. Drawing on original French sources – contemporary documents, police files, eye-witness accounts, official reports, letters and directives from the sinister Committee for Public Safety – he brilliantly recreates the paranoid atmosphere of that dreadful time. The shadow of the guillotine fell across not only Paris: the murderous work of the law which made ‘terror the order of the day’ extended to towns and cities across France, most notably in regions where the embattled Republic faced the threat of foreign invasion. In the Vendée, an uprising of a people outraged by the exiling of their priests and the execution of their king, was brutally crushed. Thousands of prisoners were taken from overcrowded prisons and drowned in the Loire to expedite the work of revolutionary justice. In rebellious Lyon, hundreds were mown down by cannon firing grapeshot. From amidst the horrors emerge moving stories of dignity, heroism, sheer audacity; improbable escapes; heartbreaking letters written by prisoners awaiting execution. All contribute to the insidious pathos of a nightmareish world in which, as someone said, ‘only the innocent go to the guillotine’. The Terror is a compelling new account of a key episode in history, a penetrating study of a vile regime and of the men who shaped and supported it in the name of truth and virtue - the ‘terrorists’, as they were called
