The Stoker (1932) DVD

The Stoker
Running Time: 01:10:01
MPAA Ratings: NR (Suitable for Children)

Producer :
Bernard Tabakin
Directed by : Chester M. Franklin
Starring : Monte Blue.... Dick
  Dorothy Burgess.... Margarita
  Noah Beery.... Santino
  Natalie Moorhead.... Vera
Writing credits : Peter B. Kyne (Story)

This movie has the romantic Monte Blue playing a spurned lover, who has sworn off women for the rest of his life. Experience the turmoil and pain he goes through when his wife and luck abandons him.

THE PLOT : A timely fast paced film. The real scenes in the bowel of a ship, where stokers are shoveling coal into the boilers are fascinating. Here is a complete review of the film included in this incredible DVD.

When Dick (Monte Blue), the owner of a large corporation, finds out that the board of directors is about to vote him out of the company he fires back that he's already got the money from his wife's estate to buy them out first. While his faithless wife Vera (Natalie Moorehead) is considering how to tell her husband that she is having an affair with their family lawyer. On his arrival at home he finds that his wife has divorce papers in hand and is ready to leave for Paris.

From here Dick renounces capitalism and women and takes off for South America as a workman (coal stoker). But a sudden turn of events, in which he gets jailed and he ends up on a below-the-border plantation, where he rescues the pretty owner Margarita (Dorothy Burgess) from the skullduggery of bandit leader Santino (Noah Beery Sr.). In the mean while Margarita has fallen for Dick and tries changing his views on woman.

It takes the corrupt Nicaraguan police, a plantation in need of rescue, and a quick rebirth in his value system to finally convince him.

The durable Monte Blue was a romantic leading man of the silent days. He rose to stardom as a rugged romancer opposite Hollywood's top silent stars, including Gloria Swanson, Clara Bow, and Norma Shearer, among many others. Blue became a dependable box-office attraction of the 1920s, playing everything from lawyers to baseball players.

Just before his demotion to the ranks of minor character actors, Monte Blue starred in an above-average series of programmers.

While Chester M. Franklin developed a reputation early on as a "children's" director. He abandoned this sort of fare in favor of grown-up projects in the 1920s. Though Chester M. Franklin had difficulty re-establishing himself in the talkie era, he finished on a high note with the movies he made in the 1930's.
