The Saving of an Empire: Transfer of Portugal's Court and Capital to Brazil, 1808
Description:
One of the most evocative scenes of the Peninsular War is that of the French General Junot riding up to the Tagus in 1807 to see the last of the British and Portuguese ships just about to leave Lisbon harbour. His ragged and bedraggled troops had marched at a punishing speed across Spain and Portugal in a bid to capture the Portuguese royal family. He almost made it. The failure of Napoleon s forces to seize Queen Maria and Joäo, the Prince Regent, was to have profound consequences both for the future course of the Peninsular War and Portugal s vast colony of Brazil. The Royal Family took with them a large proportion of the wealthiest and most influential people in Portugal as well as most of the country s gold reserves and much of its coin. They set themselves up in Brazil in such style that even after the defeat of Napoleon they preferred to continue living in Rio de Janeiro which became the capital of the Portuguese empire. Even after the death of his mother, the prince, who became King Joäo IV, remained in Brazil which therefore became a kingdom in its own right and no longer a mere colony. Eventually there were constitutional riots in Portugal in 1820 and Joäo, after thirteen years in South Africa, had to return to Europe. Shortly afterwards Brazil declared its independence. Kenneth Light investigates the circumstances surrounding the decision of the royal family to evacuate to Brazil assisted and protected by the ships of the Royal Navy. This investigation receives far more detail than is usually the case with books on the Peninsular War. The main body of the book, however, is devoted to the actual voyage across the Atlantic. The crossing of the Atlantic was made between November 1807 and March 1808 on a fleet that consisted of Portuguese and British ships. Drawing heavily upon the log books of the British ships involved, along with the many letters and reports that their crews sent to the Admiralty back in Britain, Light examines subjects such as the routes followed to Brazil and the climatic and maritime conditions endured. There is the appalling quality of the food, the hard discipline imposed on the sailors, the tense atmosphere that existed and the vicious storms. This is an exceptionally well-researched and detailed book on a subject not previously covered in any depth. --John Grehan
