Brand new books, dispatch from our warehouse in the UK

The political Achilles heel of globalization, this book argues, is that it is taking place without engaging - or even consulting -citizens at large. The author, a Dutch social scientist with a lifetime of work in Latin America, argues that the neoliberal mind set cannot appreciate key concepts like the differences between economic efficiency and vitality or between productive and unproductive investment, or the notion of the Common Good. The result of its privileging of the interests of huge transnational corporations is growing inequality, accelerating impoverishment, and, for most countries, stagnant economic growth. What is to be done? The author argues that humanity has to become engaged in the globalization process as citizens of the world, that neoliberalism as the touchstone of economic policy must be abandoned, and that new forms of global economic regulation are essential. 01479013 The political Achilles heel of globalization, this book argues, is that it is taking place without engaging - or even consulting -citizens at large. It introduces a conceptual language for thinking about multiculturalism and casts the surrounding debates in the contexts of globalization, post-colonialism and what Barnor Hesse calls "multicultural transruptions". The contributors consider a variety of diaspora formations ranging from the Muslim Umma and Black Britain to the Chinese foodscape and Transatlantic Black sporting performances. They examine the transnational impact on how cultural differences are lived and pose questions for how we participate in and think about Western societies. The material on cultural entanglements focuses on media constructions of the "Asian Gang" in Britain, gender and sexuality in "ragga music", and the ambivalence of identities in post-apartheid South Africa.
