Alasdair Ranaldson Macdonell of Glengarry was a unique character. A Highland chief who, as Sir Walter Scott wrote, lived a century too late: a passionate believer in the old Highland customs and traditions but at the same time an enthusiast for sheep farming and clearances. Glengarry's many contradictions and inconsistencies were clearly observed by his contemporaries but never seem to have impinged on his own consciousness.
A colourful character who fought a duel and stood trial for murder, who raised a regiment when he was just 21, who went on the Grand Tour in the middle of a European War and was locked up in Vienna's mental asylum.
Glengarry's life - from 1773 to 1828 - covered a period of great change in the Scottish Highlands and his biography sheds light on many aspects of this period which saw the clan chiefs move from being paternalistic leaders to rent collectors.
