The Battle of the Bulge: The Photographic History of an American Triumph
Description:
Military historian and author John R. Bruning wanted to tell the story of this battle 'through the photographs taken by brave and dedicated combat cameramen,' and he does so in The Battle of the Bulge. The text is accompanied by more than 400 photographs, some never before published. The majority of them are black and white, with a few color photographs interspersed. They portray not only American troops, but Germans as well, with snowy forest expanses and decimated urban ruins serving as backdrops. Some photos were taken in the heat of battle; others in the sad aftermath. A particularly haunting image captures a dead German soldier lying in the snow, a photograph of his wife still clutched in his frozen hand. Other photographs taken during lulls between combat chronicle troop movements and preparations. Numerous photographs of tanks and weapons are accompanied by captions providing additional information. Bruning also includes images from previous campaigns, illustrating the lead-up to the battle. In some instances, these photographs are mixed in with those taken during the Battle of the Bulge, so the reader would be wise to read the captions carefully. Along with the photographs, Bruning provides a detailed account of the battle, beginning with background discussion of the race to the Seigfried Line and analysis of Hitler s plan. He then gives a detailed play-by-play of the action the moves and countermoves on various sections of the battlefield. Stories are told on the division, regiment and individual levels; many officers and soldiers are mentioned by name those whose heroic exploits and sacrifices would earn them the Medal of Honor, as well as those who buckled under pressure. There are stories of small units whose heroic stands were vital in delaying the German advance. Mistakes and flashes of brilliance on the part of American and German alike are discussed, along with their impact on the battle. Full-page color maps throughout the text put the troop movements in a wider context. Coverage of events after the relief of Bastogne is comparatively scant, however, encompassed in only a few paragraphs. With such heavy coverage of the lead-up to the battle, the quick wrap-up may leave some readers hungry for more detail. The images in The Battle of the Bulge convey with stark honesty the brutality of war, along with the fraternity and solidarity it inspires. Sixty-five years after the largest land battle in U.S. Army history, those American soldiers who 'played a vital role in defeating the Third Reich s last offensive and turned it into a death spasm instead of a victory march' still stand as the ultimate symbol of who Americans are as a nation and a people. --Army Magazine, December, 2009

The body of work dealing with the 1944-45 Battle of the Bulge is extensive, yet in his photographic history, John R. Bruning adds to it by providing further understanding of its importance and, more impressively, what participants went through. The 300-page book is made up of several hundred photographs, many of which have never been published. These photos draw you into the world of the soldiers. Frigid conditions, exhaustion, victory, defeat and death are all conveyed through the lenses of combat photographers from both sides of the battle. The author supplements these images with well-detailed color maps showing Army positions and movements throughout the battle. Bruning also provides easy-to-read narrative that explains the enormity of this engagement that saw the deaths of some 19,000 GIs. In addition to being an excellent addition to any military history buff's collection, this book will serve as a reminder of the overwhelming hardships faced by American soldiers one cold and dangerous winter 65 years ago --Free-Lance Star, November, 2009As if to reiterate my statment about the battle of the Bulge being an evergreen modelling subject, here's another, more recent book on the subject, this time from the American point of view. Its a wopping tome measuring nearly a square foot with 288 + pages and it makes an imposing presence form the moment you pick it up. The inclusion of the phrase 'The Photographic History' in this title grabbed my attention because in a book this size with an empahsis on the photographs it's exactly the type of production I can't resist. And it dosen't disappoint; the book is a festival of wonderfully original wartime photos, reproduced to a breathtakingly high standard, so mush so you'll be drawn into them and find yourself staring at them for hours - I did. Seeing the Ardennes offensive from the US side gives a deeply poignant insight into the deprivations and downright brutal conditions with which the resiliant Gi's had to cope, and its really rather inspirational - it's total war, stripped back to the very basics. As always, i will highlight the modelling potential and this book delivers in heaps. All the main types of AFV you'd expect to see are included: Sherman, M10, Jeep, Dodge truck, etc, and plenty of high-grade photos are included of them. But this book's central theme is the American soldier and what he went through and in this instane, it's very much a case of a picture speaks a thousand words. Absolutely fantastic stuff and highly recommended. --Tamiya Military modleing Magazine, January, 2010Military historian and author John R.
