Lexi shows how to make beautiful flower portraits into wonderful dramatic paintings. She starts with a quick recap of materials and how to make and use canvas and stay wet palette. In the Techniques section of this book Lexi covers how to look at the shapes of different flowers and to reproduce this onto your painting. Different types of flowers require differing techniques in order for them to look realistic and in perspective. Lexi explains how she uses gel medium to enhance the effects of the petals and to allow graduations of colour. She talks about the importance of using transparent colours to add versatility to your palette and how Values of colour are important to show the lights and shadows of each flower. There's a useful page on lighting and posing flowers, this can make such a difference to the finished painting and Lexi shows how by moving the flower into a slightly different position one can find the most interesting shape, and this ties in very usefully with the section on composition and backgrounds. Flowers are a perfect subject for creating luminous, bright paintings and Lexi has 10 rules for creating these in your painting. There's also a useful 10 tips on troubleshooting. The beauty and strength of this book however is the excellent Directory of Flowers, where Lexi does a superb demonstration of how to paint each of 40 different flowers. On each demo she gives a clear start to finish sequence of painting, a list of colours used and has a separate in depth section where she explains how to achieve the the special details of that particular flower. This is an excellent book for those who want to paint flowers in acrylics, not in a botanical style but to create beautiful and spectacular eye catching portraits from them --Jeannie Zelos ArtworksPainting flowers has been a popular hobby for many years, and here is a book showing not only how to paint them but how to do it in acrylics. A versatile and thoroughly modern medium, acrylics are perfect for the task and bring out the glorious colors that make painting flowers such a joy. I love the way the book jumps in with both feet, hits the ground running and doesn t let up! There is even a page at the front showing you how to use the book and get the most out of each packed page. It is filled with useful tips at the beginning on working with flowers, telling you how to do useful things like pose them, make a stay-wet palette, use a viewfinder, crop images and capture the special qualities of floral colors and textures. There is even a troubleshooting guide and a palette showing you what colors to buy and what to paint on (quite a choice here). The flowers themselves are all garden favourites (modern garden favourites) and take you from Alcea (Hollyhock) to Zinnia. Each flower page shows you a large-format finished painting, what colors you need to buy, and then takes you through how to paint it. Each painting focuses on a special detail, such as painting rich shadows, value changes or adding depth to an edge, complete with staged photographs as well as a brief description of the flower and what makes it unique. This is a particularly fine and user-friendly book that will appeal even to fairly new painters, as well as having something to offer more experienced artists who want to paint this subject. --Rachel Hyde, MyShelfSearch Press' a to z series for painters is great value, and consistently impressive. The latest addition, The Acrylic Flower Painters A to Z, by the American artist Lexi Sundell, covers 40 popular species of flowers. Sundell is renowned in America for her dramatic, large-scale works. Here, she shares her expertise to explore a wide variety of shapes and colours, from the everyday to the exotic, and the hedgerow to the hot house. Acrylic paints are ideal for the subject. Whilst oils were the choice of the Old Masters for their depth of colour and textural possibilities, and watercolours became the favourite of botanical artists to allow for fluid transparent washes, their strengths come together in the acrylic medium, which has the flexibility to achieve both. In the opening pages, Sundell explains how to choose colours and use the medium, providing guidance on what grounds, brushes and palettes are best. She then works through the basic shapes of flowers, showing how to break them down geometrically in order to be able construct them from different view points. She offers an introduction to colour theory, and moves on to discuss how to light and pose flowers. She demonstrates a variety of techniques, including adding a gel medium to create texture, and the effects of using different types of brushes. This is followed by a full demonstration of the painting of a complete flower. Being a gellery owner, Sundell comes into contact with the work of a large number of artists, and she includes examples of others' work in an inspiring chapter on composition. Finally, before moving on to individual species, Sundell explains how to make flowers look both luminous and brilliant, and offers reassuring advice on what to do should things go wrong. The remaining and larger part of the book is then dedicated to tuition on how to paint each of the 40 featured species. A palette is supplied, along with comprehensive information on the sequence Sundell works through to create the vibrant finished image of each flower. A key detail is pulled out from each one and demonstrated visually, step-by-step. This is a lovely book that will allow
