In 1977 the film makers Nick Broomfield and Joan Churchill were givin an unprecedented degree of access to the euphemistically named Youth Training School (In fact a prison for young offenders) by the Director of the California Youth Authority, who was about to retire and who had decided that such institutions simply didn't work as a means of rehabilitation. The film follows the lives of four inmates, and is one of the bleakest, most uncompromising documentaries ever made about prison life........
It's release was particulary timely when then Home Secretary Michael Howard's highly controversial decision to introduce US-style 'Boot Camp' into Britain for young offenders !
