A beautiful colour 1853 print from wood engraving with hand colouring showing the egg of the Griffon vulture. The print is untitled but comes with a double sided page of titled text describing the eggs.... Info. Benjamin Fawcett (born Bridlington 1808 -1893) was one of the finest of English19thC woodblock / wood engraving colour printers. Although there is no artists/engravers signature most of the artworks/engravings in this series of books were done by A. F. Lydon ( Alexander Francis Lydon), being the principal engraver to Benjamin Fawcett, and Fawcett himself. Initially many of these plates were finished with hand colouring, many done by Fawcetts wife Mary Porter, and other local women.
Reverend Francis Orpen Morris (born1810 near Cork – died 1893 Nunburnholme, Yorkshire) who wrote the books, was an Irish clergyman, ornithologist and entomologist
It measures overall 240x150mm (9.5x6") approx. There is some foxing and a little age yellowing around the borders which is a feature of items of great age It is on good quality paper with a blank reverse. This plate is ideal for matting and framing.
Some of these prints show a little age yellowing which is a feature of items of great age and there may be some scattered but light, brown spotting (foxing). This print inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time and may have binding witness marks to edge, - please check the larger picture for condition, anything more than minor will be mentioned in the main body of the description.
This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope, and protected inside that envelope by a plastic sleeve
