This listing is for :- A circa 1776 print from copper engraving, from the date stated and not a later reproduction.
Norham Castle, Northumberland
A view of the castle from the River Tweed. Samuel Hooper April 20 1775. Engraver, Sparrow. Also printed: Norham or the North Hamlet, anciently called Ubbanford.
Provenance: Although bought at auction in a lot along with other old engravings, from my experience, the engraving comes from a series of prints in "Antiquities of England and Wales by Francis Grose" - Published in London c1776-80; Paternoster Row etc
It is printed on good quality paper. Unfortunately the bottom half of the page with the original text has been cropped, leaving only the engraving at the top with one row of text (apart from title). There is also incomplete but related text on the reverse. It bears the indent on the edges from the engraving process.
Overall including borders it measures 220 x 160 mm (8.5 x 6.25 inches) approx. The engraved area measures 150 x 105mm (6x4.25"). It is in good condition with only a little age yellowing; suitable for framing. Please check the larger picture for condition, anything more than minor will be mentioned in the main body of the description.
This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope.
