Our Lady's Chapel near Bothall, Northumberland
It was "drawn anno 1768".
The engraving shows the ruins of the Chapel or Oratory, with the trees growing amongst it. Part of the text states: " The remains of this small Chapel, or Oratory, stands in a shady solitude, on the north bank of the Wansbeck ....The whole is built of well-wrought free stone, and measures eitht yards in length .....".
There is text describing the scene in old English below the engraving. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. In the pre-mechanical period of European papermaking (from the 12thC into the 19thC), laid paper was the predominant kind of paper produced. Its use, however, diminished in the 19th century being replace with woven manufactured papers.
Provenance: The Antiquities of England and Wales"; by Francis Grose, Printed for S. Hooper, 25 Ludgate Hill, London MDCCLXXV (1775) etc. This series was published in various volumes between c1774 to late 1700's.
This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope. It is printed on laid paper which is blank on the reverse. It is in a good clean condition with a little age yellowing. The overall page including measures 310 x 220 mm (12 x 8.5 inches) approx. The engraved area measures 155x100mm (6x4") approx. The borders of this copper line engraving bears the indent marking from the printing process. This print inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time - please check the larger picture for condition. This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope.
The use of the term "an original print" in this case, is a pictorial image made in a manner which allows it to be multiplied, and originating from the date stated. This includes examples of various methods of printmaking including engravings, etchings, woodcuts etc. Inevitably many of these prints would have originally been bound in books.
