1.0- Link to a photo placed on the web (the better option)

This can be a library picture already published on the web or it can be a photo which you have placed on the web. You can store photos on the web in several ways:

  1. In your personal image store

  2. Your own website

  3. Specialist photo store websites, such as SellerSourceBook, PhotoBucket etc.....

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with web space to save your personal files and documents. You can use this as your personal image store on the web.

You need to capture a photo of your item, using a scanner or digital camera. The file which will normally be a JPG or GIF file will need to be stored in your own picture store ( Personal web space). You can then use the item listing form to link to your photo file.

There is no limits to the number of pictures you can display on your auction this way and it is entirely free of charge.

Detailed, step-by step guide to getting your photo moved into your own picture store on the web at your ISP.

Specialist photo store & Auction Services Websites

If you want a simpler or a less technical way of storing images on the web rather than using the free area provided to you by your ISP, we would recommend the following two services, they offer both a free and a paid for service for non-technically minded users. Both offer "on the fly" image compression:

1.1- SellerSourceBook

Seller Sourcebook (SSB) offers a complete selling solution featuring easy to use listing tool, image hosting, product showcase and 2500+ professionally designed templates which can be used on CQout. SSB provides detailed instructions on how to create your listing using their templates and image hosting and place them on our site. CQout sellers can also receive a 10% discount on any SSB subscription using coupon code 9867F.

1.2- Photobucket

Photobucket website offers both free and paid for services, as well as on the fly image compression

2.0- Upload your Photo from your PC to CQout server

You are provided with a simple one click facility to do this when you are filling in the listing form. We would recommend when uploading images this way that you limit the file to 85KB in size. You can of course upload larger files, but the process takes much longer, wasting your time and your broadband resources.

The files you upload must be of type .jpg or .gif.  You may upload one picture per auction listing to CQout server free of charge and there is facility to upload a further 4 pictures at a very small nominal fee.

-Recommended Picture file size, the 85KB Recommendation

The picture file size has little to do with the physical size of the photo.

You can have a huge photo that would fill the complete 17inch PC screen and still have a very small picture file size.

See a Sample Photo which is a good size and still only 45kb file size

The ideal file size for an image is approx 30kb-50kb. this is large enough to display an image that will fill a whole page on a 17inch monitor. We do not recommend very large image files. These are very slow to download for potential buyers viewing your items who are not on broadband (i.e. on modem connections).

-Tips for reducing image file size:

The 2 major factors which effect the size of an image file are :

  1. Resolution - i.e. the number of pixels ( the dots in every inch) that go to make up a picture. PC monitors can only display an image at 72 dpi. taking a photo with a "mega pixel" digital camera creates a image with a much higher resolution which is simply wasted as the results can not be seen on the web.

  2. Colour Depth - Scanners and digital camera normally produce colour images with 16million colours. A great many PCs and laptops can only display fewer colours. Reducing your image colour depth can reduce your file size 10 fold without discernable degradation of image quality.

-How do I know the size of my photo files?

Go to the directory where your photos are saved using Windows Explorer........ View........Details

Now you see a column giving the file sizes in KB (kilobytes)

-How do I reduce my photo files size?

  • Use a photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop to reduce the resolution and colour depth.

  • Use the photo editing software that came with your camera to do the same job.

  • Set your Digital Camera or Scanner on its lowest possible resolution

Do bear in mind photos uploaded to CQout are deleted 10 days after the close of auction. So if your item is not sold and you wish to re-list, do so within 10 days or  you may need to upload your image file again.

Take me to the "Sell Form"  to list my item
