The Thirteenth Guest (1932) DVD

The Thirteenth Guest (1932)
Running Time: 01:16:43
MPAA Ratings: NR (Questionable for Children)

Producer :
M.H. Hoffman
Directed by : Albert Ray
Starring : Ginger Rogers.... Marie Morgan aka Lela
  Lyle Talbot.... Phil Winston
  J. Farrel MacDonald.... Captain Ryan
  Erville Alderson.... Uncle John Adams
Writing credits : Arthur Hoerl (story)

A legend in her own time, Ginger Rogers became one of Hollywood’s youngest heartthrobs in the 30s. Better known for her musicals such as Top Hat and Swing Time, Ginger added to her repertoire by starring in a variety of dramas and comedies. Her genius won her a coveted Oscar for her dramatic performance in Kitty Foyle. In The Thirteenth Guest, Rogers teams up with the dashing Lyle Talbot to produce a memorable mystery which a2zcds.com has preserved on DVD. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD.

"Thirteen years after Morgan was murdered, his creepy, deserted mansion suddenly becomes a beehive of activity. Murder follows murder in quick succession in the abandoned manor, bringing Police Captain Ryan (J. Farrel MacDonald) and private eye Winston (Lyle Talbot) scurrying to the scene. Everybody is on the lookout for the mysterious 13th guest who failed to put in an appearance at the dinner, because it is this 13th guest that stands to inherit Morgan’s enormous wealth. Who will lift the veil off the mysterious killings? Will it be the debonair wisecracking Winston or the gritty Captain Ryan?."

"This 1932 mystery has an intriguing plot in which a long-forgotten murder suddenly becomes the hot topic of discussion. The mystery deepens when investigators realize that the corpse found in the abandoned mansion was not that of the dead man’s daughter, but that of an impersonator. Director Albert Ray continues to enthrall audiences in this fascinating drama, which has the dashing Lyle Talbot playing a fast talking private detective on whom the police captain Ryan, (played by the equally accomplished J. Farrel MacDonald), depends heavily for solving difficult cases. The plot thickens by the minute, leaving you with very little time to guess whodunit. Just when you think you have got your man (or woman), the narrative presents you with a character that seems more likely to be the murderer. The use of an electric devise to kill unsuspecting victim is truly a stroke of genius. The bumbling detective Grump provides some comic relief in an otherwise tense drama, which ends just as dramatically as it begins. The suspense is terrific throughout and you are assured of your money’s worth half way through the story. The lead characters are well supported by the rest of the cast whom the director has handled with great insight and sensitivity. Witness this delightful drama that will keep you engrossed like few other mystery movies from the 30s."

"You almost expect the ingenious Ms. Marple to appear and tie the case up - the setting in ‘The Thirteenth Guest’ is that authentic. I set out to watch this DVD because I’m a chronic fan of Ginger Rogers, but there’s a lot more to it than that. In this timeless classic movie, Albert Ray has done an immense job with the then limited resources of cinematography. Rejoice, fellow vintage buffs - this one is for us..."

"With ‘The Thirteenth Guest’ I discovered a strange fact - the best in films has taken place before my time. Wow, what a yarn. I used to associate Ginger Rogers with tap-dancing-with-Fred-Astaire, but she holds her own in an unaccustomed role. Brilliant package of storytelling, direction and performances. Right on, A2ZCDS!"
