The Illustrated London News was a newspaper founded by Herbert Ingram and Mark Lemon, the Editor of Punch, with the first edition of the Illustrated London News appearing on 14 May 1842. The ILN employed many artists, illustrators and engravers to reproduce images of the news of the day. This was the only way of producing news pictures at this time, and later when photographs became available, even they had to be reproduced using an engraved process. They also employed the services of freelance artists and engravers like Gustave Dore, John Gilbert and many others.
