This listing is for a circa 1835 print from steel engraving,
Beautifully engraved by Edward Goodall from the work by C. Stanfield
A beautiful engraving showing the island being passed by fishing boats or junks with a larger sailing boat passing behind. This area was famous for the Opium wars of the mid1800's and the Battle of First Bar, Bocca Tigris etc. SleekburnC.
Provenance: Views in India. China and On The Shores Of The Red Sea; by Commander Robert Elliott, With Descriptions By Emma Roberts. Published London : H. Fisher, R. Fisher and P. Jackson, Newgate Street - c1835.
Guangdong China - The island is above what is now the Humen Bridge on
the Pearl River or Zhu Jiang between the Nansha District of Guangzhou on
one side of the river, and Humen Town on the other. The ebay title is
gleaned from my own research and does not appear on the print.
Steel engraving was a technique for printing illustrations developed during the 1800's. The steel engraving process allowed for much finer detail in the finished print.
It is printed on very good quality paper which is blank on the reverse. The print bears the indent markings on the borders which is a feature from the steel engraving printing of prints of this period.
The overall print including borders measures 275 x 205 mm (10.75 x 8 inches) approximately. It bears the indent plate markings from the engraving printing process.
There is a little age yellowing which is a feature of items of great age and there may be some scattered but light, brown spotting ( foxing ). This print inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time - please check the larger picture for condition, anything more than minor will be mentioned in the main body of the description.
This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope.
The term "an original print" is a pictorial image made in a manner which allows it to be multiplied, and originating from the date stated. This includes examples of various methods of printmaking including engravings, etchings, woodcuts etc. Many prints inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time.
