This listing is for a circa 1775 print from copper engraving, from the date stated and not a later reproduction.

Cockle Park Tower, Northumberland

Engraved by Godfrey and "drawn in the year 1774".

The engraving shows the tower with a couple walking in the gardens. It comes original text written in old english below the copper engraving and onto the reverse of the page. Part of the text states: " .... the manor house, and belonged, tempore Edward 1ft (st), to the Bertrams, build according to the fafhion (fashion) of most of the ancient capital dwellings of this County......with a tower or reduit, to which the inhabitants might retire, and under which they could drive their cattle uppon a sudden incursion of the Scots, or of a lawlefs (lawless) banditti, called Moss Troopers.....to both which their fituation, as Borderers, made them frequently fubject.....Their usual object was cattle; not but that they fometimes (sometimes) carried off men, women and children, from whom they often exacted considerable sums for ransom...The mansion is now converted into a farm-houfe (house), and is the property of his Grace the Duke of Portland..... ". Reivers reive

There is text describing the scene in old English on the front and reverse, which is printed on hand laid paper. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. In the pre-mechanical period of European papermaking (from the 12thC into the 19thC), laid paper was the predominant kind of paper produced. Its use, however, diminished in the 19th century being replace with woven manufactured papers. Keenlyside

Provenance: The Antiquities of England and Wales"; by Francis Grose, Printed for S. Hooper, 25 Ludgate Hill, London MDCCLXXV (1775) etc. This series was published in various volumes between 1774 to late 1700's.

It is printed on laid paper which is blank on the reverse. It is in a good clean condition with a little age yellowing. The overall page including borders and text measures 310 x 220 mm (12 x 8.5 inches) approx. The engraved area measures 155x100mm (6x4") approx. The borders of this copper line engraving bears the indent marking from the printing process. This print inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time - please check the larger picture for condition. This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope.

The use of the term "an original print" in this case, is a pictorial image made in a manner which allows it to be multiplied, and originating from the date stated. This includes examples of various methods of printmaking including engravings, etchings, woodcuts etc. Inevitably many of these prints would have originally been bound in books.
