Norham Castle, Northumberland
Engraved by Samuel Sparrow and dated April 20, 1775. Also signed Samuel Hooper. It was "drawn anno 1768".
The engraving shows the River Tweed with the Castle in the background Part of the text states: " The Castle stand son an eminence on the eastern bank of the river Tweed, near the influx of the river Till.....The Manor of Northam is now in the possession of Sir Thomas Haggerston of Haggerston, Bart.....as surveyed about the year 1751 and extending eastward on the banks of the Tweed near two miles, belong to Robert Fenwick of Lemington Esq in right of his wife Mrs Fenwick, one of the daughters and coheirs of the late William Ord, of Sandybank Esq....". There is text describing the scene in old English on the front and reverse, which is printed on hand laid paper. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. In the pre-mechanical period of European papermaking (from the 12thC into the 19thC), laid paper was the predominant kind of paper produced. Its use, however, diminished in the 19th century being replace with woven manufactured papers.
Provenance: The Antiquities of England and Wales"; by Francis Grose Esq FAS. Printed for S. Hooper, 25 Ludgate Hill, London MDCCLXXV (1775) etc. This series was published in various volumes between 1773and into the late 1700's.
It is printed on laid paper which has the related text on front and reverse. The plate is slightly unaligned with the text. There is some age yellowing with scatteret foxing, and watermark to top border edge. The overall page including measures 310 x 220 mm (12 x 8.5 inches) approx. The engraved area measures 155x100mm (6x4") approx. The borders of this copper line engraving bears the indent marking from the printing process. This print inevitably would have been originally bound in a book at some time - please check the larger picture for condition. This item will be shipped flat in a board backed envelope.
The use of the term "an original print" in this case, is a pictorial image made in a manner which allows it to be multiplied, and originating from the date stated. This includes examples of various methods of printmaking including engravings, etchings, woodcuts etc. Inevitably many of these prints would have originally been bound in books.
